Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCi)

Consumer Concerns and Important Considerations

The Federal Government has repeatedly stressed the upcoming need for long-term care insurance for our nation and the detrimental effect the lack of long-term care insurance will have on the national economy and productivity.

Now the Federal Government is demonstrating leadership for Americans to purchase long-term care insurance by taking strong measures such as the Long-Term Care Security Act (which has made long-term care insurance available and affordable to some 20 million federal employees) plus the enactment of several LTCi tax advantages.  This proclaims loud and clear that the Federal Government deems long-term care insurance to be a national priority.  John Hancock and MetLife, because of their strong financial assets and expertise, have been chosen to administer the program.  If you are a Federal Employee we urge you to lean more about The Federal Long-Term Care Insurance Program.

Regardless if you are a Federal Employee or in the private sector, don’t be discouraged by a company that carefully evaluates your health.  Long-term care insurance companies that use firm and consistent underwriting standards should, over the long run, have more stable premiums.  This is because they are careful about the risks they accept and likely to have more predictable claims results.

The Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) provides health insurance counseling to senior California residents free of charge.  The statewide HICAP telephone number is 1-800-434-0222.  The name, address and telephone number of the local HICAP program can be found inside California by calling 1-800-510-2020, outside California by calling

1-800-677-1116 or by clicking HICAP Local Contacts.

The New York Health Insurance Information, Counseling and Assistance Program--HIICAP, encourages people to protect themselves from the high costs of long-term care and encourages insurance companies to provide that protection.  The greatest threat facing people and their families today is the financial, social, psychological and familial consequences of needing long-term care.  The New York State HIICAP website has a wealth of resources.

Every state has a State Health Insurance Assistance Program--SHIP.  This link has a comprehensive list of state long-term care insurance assistance resources and telephone numbers.
